If you're like me, looking at pictures of coasters and reading about them is almost like sneaking a peek at a men's magazine: Wow, look at the curves on that baby! If you're not like me, praise the lord. If you too have a curious fascination with thrill machines however, here are some great books to satisfy your urges. Just keep them out of sight from your children.
Robert Coker, Friedman, Michael Publishing Group, Inc. Coker offers a brief history of the scream machines and then examines many of the most popular wood and steel coasters. A great read from an impassioned fan.
Nick Cook, Lerner Publishing Group. You have to get this book for the title alone. In addition to exploring a number of rides, Cook delves into the psychology and physics of coasters.
Todd H. Throgmorton, McFarland & Company, Inc. An exhaustive overview of hundreds of coasters at over 100 North American parks.
Scott Rutherford, MBI Publishing Company. This is more of a look back at the evolution of roller coasters than an overview of the contemporary behemoths. Lots of wonderful archival and present-day photos.
Steven J. Urbanowicz, Kensington Publishing Corp. A practical guide to help coaster fans find and ride the best coasters. Includes suggested itineraries.
